It’s not the years in your life that count, but the life in your years

The Alzheimer’s ‘Active Prevention’ Road Map

In July 2022 Alzheimer’s overtook both cardio-vascular disease and cancer to become this country’s biggest killer. Are we all therefore powerless to avoid getting caught up in the tsunami of this cruel disease? The answer to that is emphatically ‘No’!

At New Synapse we’ve done the in-depth research, so you don’t have to. The Alzheimer’s Active Prevention road map will guide you in easy steps through the scientific, only evidence based and practical steps that we should all consider taking to shape a better future – for ourselves and for our loved ones.

UK 20 Year Forecast

Today, just under one million in the UK are living with Alzheimer’s. That equates to one diagnosis every 60 seconds; by 2040 that strike rate will almost have doubled – an additional case every 33 seconds.

The Alzheimer’s Society forecasts that within the next 25 years one in three of us will be directly affected; either caring for someone with the condition, developing it ourselves, or both.

Genetic Influences

Alzheimer’s remains the dark shadow of our times; it accounts for over 60% of the global dementia burden. That is because we’re living longer, and age remains the most significant risk factor. Yet very few people understand that Alzheimer’s is also the most avoidable variant of the dementia syndrome.

In the case of Alzheimer’s pathology, genetic pre- disposition (APOE-4 allele) does not equate to genetic pre-determination.

The Lancet’s (2020) Special Report on Alzheimer’s is very clear; 42% of Alzheimer’s risk factors remain modifiable. In other words, our personal life-style choices can be adjusted to gain real protective effect.

‘Active Prevention’ Roadmap

New Synapse is a purpose-designed and built Alzheimer’s prevention training & briefing facility in West Dorset.

Over ten years of study and research, including four full pilot-test courses in the last 18 months, have sculpted a road map for Alzheimer’s Active Prevention offered in just two formats:

  • The ‘full fat’ milk version (8 hours). Although this can be squeezed into one day, to maximise retention and enjoyment it’s perhaps best completed over two days. An afternoon session on Day 1 followed by a morning session only on Day 2. Select an overnight stay locally – see website. This option includes quick dives into only relevant brain science – for that deeper understanding.
  • A ‘skinny latte’ version (4 hours), morning or afternoon – it’s your choice. This condensed package focuses on the key action steps and provides only a sprinkling of the important brain science.

The Alzheimer’s Active Prevention briefing is scaffolded around six pillars that optimise your brain resilience and build the strongest possible cognitive reserve (Sleep; Move; Nourish; Calm; Connect & Challenge). The content of each of the seven modules has been carefully quality and fact-checked by Dementia UK’s CEO & Chief Admiral Nurse (Dr Hilda Hayo).

No prior knowledge is assumed, nor is it required. Recent experience confirms that attendees return home feeling engaged, enlightened and empowered (see testimonials: www.newsynapse.co.uk).

Armed with a unique compendium of well-illustrated notes that capture all the modules’ key content, you’ll be ideally positioned to make your own well-informed brain-care decisions.

If you can’t get to New Synapse in West Dorset, we can come to you – providing you provide a suitable venue and a large enough audience (20 – 100 pax).

Pharmaceuticals

Why bother with prevention measures if, as the media has been claiming so loudly since 2022, ‘Big Pharma’ stands close to delivering a silver bullet against Alzheimer’s? For now, it’s sufficient to know that:

  • Only two of the original three plaque- busting drugs (lecanemab and donanemab) are still authorised for Stage IV clinical trials.
  • Lecanemab has failed to restore cognition – in any clinically significant sense.
  • Both drugs can clear protein aggregates and therefore slow the disease – by up to 2 years. Ultimately, however, Alzheimer’s must be terminal.

Prevention – The Best ‘Cure’

Prevention, right now, remains the only real solution.

Who amongst us wants to become an emotional, financial and practical burden on loved ones through our autumn years? Your brain health remains your greatest wealth, so learn how to live better, longer.

It is hardly ever too late to start; on the other hand, it’s rarely too early either – the benefits of following the road map are both cumulative and synergistic.
